Terms of the agreement were not disclosed. GRiD's claim to fundamental patents for portable laptop computers was first announced by John V. Roach, chairman and chief executive officer of Tandy, in April of this year. Since that time, GRiD has been negotiating licenses with various companies. According to Dataquest Inc., a leading industry research firm, the U.S. true portable computer market is expected to grow from 647,000 units in 1988 to 834,000 units in 1989. Roach, citing this potential growth in the market, told analysts, "We have every reason to believe that our patent rights apply to a significant number of present portable laptop computers as well as those to be manufactured in the future." Twindows represents one of the first times that a major piece of character- based software has been directly ported to an advanced graphical interface. Users can easily exchange data with other windows applications through Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE), or by using the clipboard. Users can select commands and ranges through dialog boxes with the mouse. With the introduction of Twindows, 1-2-3 spreadsheet users will enjoy file and command compatibility of the Lotus v. 1.A and 2.01 files. Other file import and export capabilities have been provided, such as Enable versions 1.15 and 2.15; Supercalc 3 version 2.1 through Supercalc 4 version 1.10; Visicalc; DIF; CSV; and ASCII. Some powerful display features have been added, such as Twindows preview mode that displays up to 132 columns by 43 rows on the screen, vs. the standard 80 columns and 25 rows. Cells with zeros, negative numbers, numbers below a user-defined threshold, numbers that changed with the last recalculation, and dependencies can be displayed in user-selected colors. A new feature warns if a formula refers to a blank or label cell. Extensive graphing options include presentation-quality scatter, bar, pie, and 3-D pie/bar graphs. A selection of type styles and font sizes are also available. All MS-Windows printers are supported. Mosaic's Twindows operates on XTs with 640K, but the company recommends either a 286 or 386 IBM or compatible system with 640K using MS Windows 286 v.2.11. Twindows supports up to 8 megabytes of EMS memory. A sparce memory- management technique is used to insure that blank areas of the spreadsheet do not occupy valuable memory. Due to ship by December, Twindows will retail for $349. The new software provides PC users with a tool for developing animated presentations for sales, marketing, training, and industrial video applications.
